James Thomer is a musician, filmmaker and interdiscplinary artist based in Los Angeles.
After releasing music under his art rock project James The Fifth for several years, his compositions have expanded into jazz, orchestral music, ambient music, collage pieces and more. He has scored music for television, short films, and has had his music licensed on CBS’ All Rise. In 2022, he released his debut LP Days of Wine in 2022 on Mutation Records (US) and Tearjerk Records (Aus).
His film and video projects include his short film Young Phil, a fake CBS pilot about the life of a young Dr. Phil; music videos (”Love Life”, “Blondie”); video and sound installations; and countless other short form videos.
He completed his MFA in Music Composition/Performance from the California Institute of the Arts in 2023 and plays in a jazz trio nearly every week at Checker Hall in Highland Park. Most recently he released Water Temple, an EP of reimagined and rearranged covers of the original Nintendo 64 Ocarina of Time soundtrack.
